| The
Story Of Valentine |
| It's believed that
the holiday of Valentine's Day is derived
from the Roman feast of Lupercalia.
Early Rome was surrounded by woods inhabited
by dangerous wolves and to keep them
at bay the Romans called upon the help
of one of their gods, Lupercus. Held
in honour of Lupercus a spring festival
was celebrated on February 15th. |
| On the day before
the festival the names of girls were
entered into jars having been written
on pieces of paper. Young men then took
it in turn to draw a name, who would
then become the young man's companion
for the year. |
| The legend continues
that the name St. Valentine's Day was
derived from a priest named Valentine.
In the early days of Christianity Valentine
was a Roman Priest. His then emperor,
Claudius II, ordered that Roman Soldiers
should not become either married or
engaged, believing that as married men,
the soldiers would prefer their family
life to the wars he wished to command.
In defiance Valentine secretly married
the young couples and was eventually
arrested and after a spell of, imprisonment,
put to death. |
| Valentine was beheaded
on February 14th and was subsequently
named as a saint. Priests then moved
the spring holiday from the 15th to
the 14th - thus becoming St. Valentine's
Day. |
